Table Tennis NZ National Selectors

Table Tennis New Zealand (TTNZ) has appointed selectors for the National Selection Panel. The panel will select players for both able bodied and para teams and ensure the process is clear and consistent. These individuals bring a wealth of experience and are committed to identifying and ensuring that the most skilled talent and prepared players represent New Zealand on the international stage.

 

National Team Selectors (able bodied and para):

  • Chris Young (Convenor of Selectors)
  • Malcolm Lowe
  • Anna King

Their term is from 31 March 2026 to 31 December 2027.

The National Team Selectors are the same panel who will consider the nomination of Athletes to NZOC to be considered for selection in the Youth Olympic Games - Dakar Team.

Chris Young

Chris Young as 'Convenor' of selectors brings a strong understanding of the sport, having spent 13 years with TTNZ as Operations Manager, where she built connections with athletes, coaches, and the wider table tennis community.

After stepping away from her full time role, Chris has continued to give back. She served as a National Selector and National Para Selector from 2023 to 2025.

A former player herself, Chris shared, “Being reappointed to the selection panel means I can give back to the sport I have played and loved for most of my life.”

Chris, as 'Convenor' will coordinate and lead the discussions and act as liaison for the panel with the TTNZ operational team throughout the process. Selections must be independent and follow the criteria and Chris will ensure rigorous and due process is followed.

Malcolm Lowe 

Malcolm Lowe brings over 50 years of experience in table tennis. He has competed at a national level, served on the TTNZ Board from 2011 to 2013, and is currently a Lead Medical Classifier for Para table tennis.

Malcolm shared, “Table tennis has been a big part of my life for over 50 years. I have experienced the sport as a player, coach, and parent, and I understand the journey athletes and families go through.

My background as a doctor has shaped how I approach decisions, with a strong focus on fairness, objectivity, confidentiality, and professionalism. I believe these qualities are important in the selection process.

I hope to contribute my experience to support clear, consistent, and fair decisions, and to give back to the table tennis community.”

 

Anna King

Anna King has been involved in table tennis from a young age and remains closely connected to the sport.

She served as President of Table Tennis Nelson from March 2024 to March 2026. Today, she continues to give back as a volunteer with Table Tennis Nelson. 

Anna shared, “I wanted to join the TTNZ selection panel because I care about different areas of table tennis and want to contribute to the player selection process. I believe fair selection plays an important role in building confidence and strong teams.

I enjoy working with others and have experience in team environments. I am looking forward to working with the panel to assess performance, potential, and commitment in a fair and balanced way. In my day to day mahi, I work with people, have honest conversations, and help work through challenges, and I will bring that same approach to the role.”

National Veteran Selectors

TTNZ has a separate selection panel for Veterans Championships, this panel selects the NZ Team for the National Veterans Championships and the Australian Veterans Championships.

Val Beaver

Val Beaver has been a valued member of the Veteran Selection Panel for several years and has served as Convenor of Selectors for much of that time.

She brings strong connections across the table tennis community and a good understanding of the Veteran players.

A people-focused individual and active player, Val enjoys engaging with players and learning about their journeys. She shared, “It has been a pleasure to continue in this role. It allows you to connect with players you may not usually interact with and better understand their level of play.”

Val works closely with her fellow selectors to make informed and fair decisions.

Gregg Davey

Gregg Davey has over 15 years of experience as a Veterans Selector.

He has been involved with Canterbury Table Tennis since 2001, both as a representative player and a long serving committee member, contributing across interclub and player development.

He has participated in many tournaments around New Zealand and has also competed regularly at international events.

An active veterans player, it gives him a strong understanding of the veterans landscape.

Gregg shared, “With over 15 years as a selector and being actively involved in veterans table tennis, I bring a strong understanding of players and their level of play. I stay closely connected to the game and work alongside my fellow selectors to ensure decisions are fair, balanced, and well informed selections."

Averil Roberts

With over 60 years in table tennis, Averil Roberts began her journey in Canterbury and has held a range of roles, including four years as TTNZ Administration Officer in Wellington.

She has also contributed extensively as an official, serving as an International Umpire since 2000 and a Blue Badge Umpire from 2003 to 2024. In these roles, Averil has had the opportunity to closely observe matches and player performance, giving her strong insight to make informed decisions. During her time in Australia, she was Convenor of the Victorian Veteran Selection Committee. 

Averil shared, “Since returning to New Zealand in 2019, I have been involved as a Veteran Selector. Through my officiating and involvement with players across all levels, I am able to watch the action closely and make informed selections.”
