South Island’s Premier Open and Para Tournament
The South Island Individual and Para Championships is one of TTNZ’s premier individual tournaments, showcasing top-level competition, emerging talent, and the spirit of South Island table tennis. Held annually, this long-running tournament has a history spanning more than 50 years, with coveted South Island Champion titles on the line for players across multiple divisions.
As a key qualification pathway, the Championships doubles as a New Zealand team selection event for Open, Under 19, and Under 15 age groups, giving athletes the chance to secure national representation through their performances. The programme offers a full range of categories, from junior events through to graded and veteran age groups, as well as dedicated Para classes, ensuring meaningful competition opportunities for players at every stage of their table tennis journey.

Top 8 Showdown for NZ Team Spots
The South Island Individual and Para Championships features a special Stage 2 Top 8 qualification event in the Open, Under 19, and Under 15 categories, where New Zealand team selection is directly on the line. The Top 4 from the Stage 1 qualifying rounds at the South Island Championships join already qualified players from earlier TTNZ Qualifier events, creating a true national showdown for automatic NZ team places.
Championing Inclusivity Through Para Table Tennis
A dedicated Para section sits at the heart of the Championships, reflecting TTNZ’s commitment to making its premier tournaments genuinely inclusive and accessible. Para athletes compete across recognised classes in a quality environment, supported by TTNZ’s wider efforts to grow Para opportunities nationally and embed inclusion as a core part of the high-performance and participation pathway.
South Island Players on the Big Stage
Hosting one of TTNZ’s premier national events in the South Island gives local players a rare chance to test themselves against many of the country’s best without leaving their own island. From aspiring juniors to experienced graded and veteran players, athletes can experience top-level competition and a national event environment in an accessible, familiar setting close to home.
