Purpose

TOPX Tournament is a premier invitational table tennis tournament for New Zealand’s top-ranked and representative players. It offers a format where each athlete competes against all peers in their respective event, maximising match exposure, athlete development and performance benchmarking.

This elite competition supports the development of NZ’s top athletes by offering TTNZ ranking points, prize money, and direct selection spots for the 2027 New Zealand National Squads.

Players are expected to be at the venue at least 45mins prior to any tentative scheduled playing time.
Format of Play
  • A full-round robin will be used for all TOPX events, whereby all players will play 7 matches across the two-day tournament.
  • Open singles will be best of 7 games to 11.
  • Under 19 singles will be best of 5 games to 11.
Order of Play
  • The order of play for the first 3 rounds of matches is pre-determined. The order of play for rounds 4 though 7 will be determined based on the results of rounds 1-3.
    • The 8 players will start in two pools of 4, Group 1 with players seeded 1,4,5,8 & Group 2 with players seeded 2,3,6,7. The order of play for rounds 1-3 can be seen below.

  • The order of play for rounds 4-7 will be determined based on results of the first 3 rounds of group play, with all players competing against the remaining 4 players. The order of play for rounds 4-7 can be seen below.

PLAYER INVITATIONS & ELIGIBILITY

1. General Invitation Principles 

  • A maximum of eight (8) players per age category (Open and Under 19) and per gender will be invited to compete in the TopX Event. 
  • A player may only compete in one (1) age category. 
  • Invitations will be issued sequentially by age category, commencing with the Open event, followed by the Under 19 event. 

2. Eligibility Requirements 

  • To be considered eligible, players must meet all requirements of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), including: 
  • Holding New Zealand citizenship; 
  • Holding a valid New Zealand passport; and 
  • Having completed any required stand-down period in accordance with ITTF regulations. 
  • Table Tennis New Zealand (TTNZ) may invite a maximum of two (2) players per age category and per gender who are not eligible to represent New Zealand in all ITTF events. 

3. Open Event Invitations 

  • The top two (2) senior world-ranked male players and the top two (2) senior world-ranked female players will each be allocated a position in the Open event. 
  • The remaining invitations, up to a maximum of eight (8) players per gender, will be allocated to the highest-ranked eligible players from the May Open Merit List. 

4. Under 19 Event Invitations 

  • The top one (1) Under 19 and top one (1) Under 15 world-ranked male and female players will each be allocated a position in the Under 19 event, provided they have not already been invited to compete in the Open event. 

The remaining invitations, up to a maximum of eight (8) players per gender, will be allocated to the highest-ranked eligible players from the May Under 19 Merit List.  

5. World Ranking (WR) Invitation Principles 

  • The ITTF World Ranking List dated Week 20 (11 May) will be used to determine World Ranking (WR) positions. 
  • Should any WR invitation be declined, or the eligible player be unavailable, the position will not be offered to the next highest world-ranked player. Instead, the position will revert to the applicable May Merit List. 

6. Acceptance of Invitations 

  • Player invitations will be issued via email. 
  • Players will have seventy-two (72) hours from the time of issue to confirm acceptance of their position in the TOPX Event. 
  • Positions not confirmed within this timeframe, or formally declined, will be reallocated. 

7. Publication 

  • Confirmed player lists will be published on the official Table Tennis New Zealand website. 
Officials

Referee: A Referee will be appointed (TBC)
Umpires: TTNZ will have some umpires assist at this event. But it is an expectation that players will also be required to umpire some matches. Umpiring requirements for individuals will be communicated on the day.

Regulations

The tournament will be conducted in accordance with the TTNZ National Tournament Regulations and the current ITTF Laws and Regulations of Table Tennis. The Referee’s decisions are final.

No matches are to be defaulted. Any defaults# will be sanctioned by players voiding all ranking points, prize money and deeming them ineligible for a position in the 2027 TTNZ National Squads.  

# Exception being for medical or injury, with medical certificate being provided within 48h to verify.
 
Seedings, Draws and Results

The top 2 World ranked players in the Open will be seeded first. The remaining six players in Open and U19 events will then be seeded using the respective TTNZ June Merit lists 2026. Draws will be released by June 15th.

Clothing: Athletes may wear any clothing that complies with ITTF Regulations. NO white clothing.

Ranking points

Ranking points will be allocated according to the TTNZ ranking regulations for all events.

The Open Ranking Points allocation is as per the table below, with the U19 events adjusted by the respective age group factor of 20%.

TTNZ 2027 National Squad – Spot

The 1st placed player in each age event of each gender will be granted a place in the 2027 TTNZ National Squads subject to them being a player eligible to represent NZ in all ITTF events and meeting the full national squad criteria.

Racket Control

All rackets must comply with ITTF Regulations. Racket control testing may be conducted at any time without prior warning.

Child Safeguarding

Supervision of Minors

TTNZ takes the health, safety and well-being of our players seriously. Please familiarise yourself with all TTNZ’s child protection and safe-guarding policies and procedures HERE.
If a minor (under 18) attends this tournament adequate adult supervision is mandatory and at their travel costs are at the Players expense.  
Adequate adult supervision options include:
1) An accompanying person, either a parent or a legal guardian.
2) A police-vetted coach and/or adult.  
 
Accomodation & Travel

Players are fully responsible for all travel, accommodation and meal arrangements at their own cost. Players from outside the wider Auckland region will receive a travel subsidy from TTNZ.

Photography & Personal Data

By participating in this tournament, athletes consent to TTNZ using their or their child’s photographs and images for promotional and publicity purposes. Athletes also agree to TTNZ collecting and using their personal data for marketing and promotional activities, in compliance with applicable privacy laws.
