PLAYER RATINGS (RANKINGS) + MERIT LISTS
A full ratings list for tournament managers to use when importing into Tournament Planner is available from TTNZ. Please email TTNZ office ttnz@tabletennis.nz to request up to date Excel spreadsheet.
Ratings points are calculated based on points gained or lost for wins and losses, which in turn are graded against the quality of the opponent. Additional weighting for event types are also provided. Results for rated events are provided to TTNZ at the conclusion of tournaments, with the ratings system then updated with the results.
After a player completes their first tournament they are added to the ratings list and given a provisional rating. The provisional rating can be used by tournament officials for seeding purposes. Players with provisional rating points are denoted on the ratings list by **
The provisional rating is calculated based on wins/losses from the players first tournament. Provisional ratings will be adjusted after each tournament as more information becomes available.
Players who have a final rating, who win or lose games against players who have a provisional rating will not win or lose any ratings points.
Once a player has completed enough games they will qualify for a final rating. This final rating is calculated based on all games won/lost in all tournaments played.
Players drop off the published ratings lists if they have not played in the previous 12 months, or if they become an overseas player, rather than being affiliated to a member Association. If a player leaves NZ permanently, or is unable to play again, they can also be removed from the published listings with a confirmation of this from their Association. They do not disappear from the database altogether, so would still retain a rating if they came back to play. Removing inactive players assists in determining which players are ineligible for Graded events.
Guideline for applying initial ratings for new players:
100 points: D Grader: Inexperienced junior or weak senior
200 points: C Grader: Interclub standard player, without proven competitive ability, or strong schools player
400 points: B Grader: Strong interclub player
800 points: A Grader: Proven representative or international player.:
General Statement of the new system:
In 2024 TTNZ is rolling out a new ranking system designed with the future in mind.
This system operates in parallel with the current rating system, it is modelled after the highly successful ITTF ranking system. More information regarding the new system can be found in this document.
THIS SYSTEM WILL RUN IN PARALLEL WITH THE CURRENT RATING SYSTEM FOR 2024. THIS SYSTEM IS IN PUBLIC TRIAL TO ENSURE ITS EFFICACY BEFORE FULL ADOPTION.
NOTE: All 2024 tournaments will utilise the existing rating system until the trials for the new system conclude. (This will be no earlier than 1st Jan 2025).
NOTE: There will be NO ranking or merit lists released on the Nov 1st 2024, due to the end of year review. The ranking and merit lists including the NZ Open results will be released on Dec 1st.
High Level Overview:
Players will earn points by progressing through tournaments, which scale up in
value from association closed events, to regional opens to national championships. TTNZ has ~50 competitions on the 2024 calendar, the top seven results going towards each player's ranking, expiring on a 12-month rolling basis.
The system will also be easy to follow, as points are like building blocks rather than a complex calculation. Players will battle for points to climb the national senior ranking list, with merit lists (Top 10) for age categories being released periodically.
In addition, TTNZ will launch a Para ranking list in 2024 for the first time.
Rationale for the new system:
Merit lists represent the Top 10 players in a sepcific category; U13, U15, U19, Open, O40, O50 and O60. The lists comprise of points from a player’s top five (5) results in the specific category only. Merit lists will be released quarterly, in 2024 this will be at the same time as the May, July and November Ranking lists.
NOTE: There will be NO Merit lists released on Nov 1st 2024, due to the end of year review. The Merit lists including the NZ Open results will be released on Dec 2nd.
